We tend to think of the present as the way it has always been. Of course, this is not so!
The N2 national road is a relatively new addition to the road network of the Overberg in particular. So how did the pioneers of centuries past travel from Cape Town to Swellendam?
To answer this question, your committee is proud to announce our talk for June is by none other than our own John Paisley! John will explore the old routes with us and in particular The Old Caepse Wagenpad which travellers en route from Cape Town to the Eastern “interior” used. This was no easy matter. How did ox wagons get over the mountains and rivers that were barriers to travel…?
To learn more about this interesting aspect of early travel, which eventually opened up the interior for the mountain-locked Cape, please join us on Wednesday 21 June in the Drostdy Schuur at 18h00 for 18h30 to listen to John tell us about it. John has a naturally easy manner of communicating. We can therefore expect a really interesting talk.
