Outing to Rheenendal

Good afternoon to you, dear heritage friend.Good news at last! Your committee has arranged an outing to the farm Rheenendal and the old water mill on the farm. Rheenendal is the family farm of the Van Eeden family and the Van Eeden family is one of the old families of Swellendam. The idea of an outing, (not a meeting), (the first SHA gathering since the lockdown was instituted in March) has been chosen as it is in keeping with the level 2 rules of lockdown. The outing will take the form of a picnic out in the open at the farmstead. There you will be able to meet with old member-friends and social distance……… all at the same time!! ….Wow!!! Therefore, members (and visitors, who are welcome), are asked to provide their own picnic basket and chairs and whatever else you feel you need to make yourself comfortable. During the picnic lunch the well known raconteur, Dr Morley Thomson, will talk to us about the Van Eeden family as well as the old mill which, incidentally, was completely restored by SHA (then known as The swellendam Trust) some years ago.

As parking is somewhat restricted at the homestead, we will meet at our usual rallying point, Zanddrift (Drostdy) Restaurant parking area at 10h30 on Thursday 24th September. There we would like members as far as possible to share vehicles out to Rheenendal.Where is Rheenendal I hear you ask? The farm is roughly 7kms from our meeting place on the R60 going towards Ashton. The farm turnoff is just before one gets to the old mill, on the right hand side of the road. There is no charge for this outing and we encourage you to attend while also complying with level 2 rules.
